Qingyang Tom Xi 席青阳

RESEARCH SCIENTIST | MUSICIAN

I'm a time-series researcher with PhD training at NYU's Music and Audio Research Lab (MARL), working on audio informatics with Dr. Brian McFee. I'm also a classically trained pianist, music director, and composer. As a scientist and a musician, my overall mission is to enliven the practice of human communication.

Previously, I worked as sound/music programmer for a variety of shows both in and out of NYC. I also dabbled in the art of managing operations for a line of water-based nail polish. I received my master's in music technology from NYU Steinhardt, and my bachelor's in piano performance and composition from Boston University.

My research interests are at the intersection of signal processing, audio informatics, music theory, and mathematics. My doctoral thesis proposed a framework for reasoning about ambiguity in music structure analysis; and my master's thesis culminated in designing and releasing GuitarSet, a dataset of acoustic guitar recordings with high precision note-level annotations.
